EXCLUSIVE: Watch the First Clip of ‘Game of Homes,’ Your Next TV Obsession
It probably won’t help with your Jon Snow withdrawal, but Game of Homes promises to add some major DIY-based drama to your TV lineup.
Discovery Family‘s new series, which debuts September 6 at 9/8c, may pay homage to HBO’s Game of Thrones in its title, but the premise is more like a mash-up of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and The Hunger Games.
The oddities start even before the competition does. Unlike most design shows, the four teams taking part don’t redo their own homes or give one they’ve purchased a new look. Instead they choose a dilapidated house that is slated for demolition based solely on the exterior. In a play out of Storage Wars’ book, they won’t see the inside until they’ve picked it.
The showrunners then move the homes — in a process that involves lifting them off their foundations and transporting them by barge — to the “Renovation Zone,” an arena created for the show. The teams must live inside the homes in the arena while they renovate them room by room each week. Sadly host Cameron Mathison, of Entertainment Tonight and All My Children, does not dress up in over-the-top garb, a la Effie Trinket, but he does make similar proclamations into a megaphone from the center of the faux neighborhood known as “the circle.”
Judges Cheryl Torrenueva and Jeremy MacPherson along with a rotating cast of guest judges, will choose their favorite renovation each week. The winners get to keep their house, and have it moved once again, out of the arena and safely back to their neighborhood of choice.
May the odds be ever in their favor.
